In his weekly visit to WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now with Coy Barefoot, Bob Gibson joins the show to talk about the latest in the race between Jim Webb and George Allen. Polls show the two men are locked in a statistical dead heat. Coy and Bob take calls from listeners, many of whom wonder if character is an important factor in selecting a candidate.

GenTech: Wikis

We have recently been exploring using wikis in our teaching. In this show, the GenTech boys are joined by special guest Linda Wright from the College of Health Professions at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia. We discuss some of the opportunities and challenges inherent in using wikis in the classroom.

Anti-nuclear activist Helen Caldicott speaks in Charlottesville

Helen Caldicott (left) is a Australian physician who moved to Boston in late seventies. She left medicine in 1980 in order to campaign against nuclear weapons, and according to Wikipedia, currently travels between the United States and Australia, lecturing against nuclear power.

Caldicott was in Charlottesville on September 30 to give a talk, sponsored by the Charlottesville Center for Peace and Justice, Sierra Club of the Piedmont, and People Allied for Clean Energy. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is currently deciding whether or not to expand the nuclear power plant at North Anna on Lake Louise.

Caldicott’s latest book is called Nuclear Power is Not the Answer To Global Warming or Anything Else.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Twenty-year navy veteran speaks out against Jim Webb

Commander Jennifer Brooks is a twenty-year veteran of the U.S Navy and a graduate of the Naval Academy. Commander Brooks was among the first women to attend the Academy, at the same time Jim Webb wrote an article called “Women Can’t Fight” for the Washingtonian Magazine.

“When the article came out, it basically legitimized bad treatment towards us.” says Brooks. Brooks was a guest on the September 29 edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now with Coy Barefoot. She described some of the things that happened to her while at the Academy.

Wake-Up Call: Children, Youth and Family Services

It’s fundraiser time on the October 1st edition of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call. Jackie Bryant is the executive director of Children Youth and Family Services in Charlottesville. Jack Gallagher is on the of the organization’s education coordinators, who teaches a class called “Surviving the Teen Years.” Bryant and Gallagher talk about the history of the non-profit, which exists to serve the needs of children in the community.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Details on the First Amendment Writes songwriting and poetry contest

Josh Wheeler of the Thomas Jefferson Center for Free Expression and Sibley Johns of the Music Resource Center join Coy Barefoot on the September 28th edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now. The two organizations as well as Starr Hill Presents are sponsoring a song-writing and poetry contest called First Amendment Writes. The contest “celebrates the creative heights that can only be achieved when artists are free to express themselves on any theme, subject or idea.” Application forms can be found here.

Charlottesville–Right Now: New VDOT Commissioner David Ekern


David Ekern (right) was sworn in on September 20 as the new VDOT commissioner

David Ekern is the new commissioner of the Virginia Department of Transportation. He joined Coy Barefoot on the September 28th episode of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now. Ekern took office last week after a stint as the director of Idaho’s transportation department.

“That was a lot of fun,” says Ekern. “We made a lot of changes, we introduced new ways of doing business, we focused on innovative finance, and we had a really aggresive agenda with the legislature to streamline and modernize what’s going on in Idaho.”
