Stress Symptoms Caused by the Use of Electric Training Collars on Dogs in Everyday Life Situations

This class will review the research that has been conducted into the efficacy and welfare implications of the use of electric shock collars. After which the reasons why the Institute of Animal Welfare and Behavior at Hanover University of Veterinary Medicine decided to expand on this research. Their methods, findings and the implications for the use of these devices in practice will be discussed in detail.
The Biology of Emotion in People & Dogs
Patricia McConnell, PhD
Ever looked at your dog and wondered how much of her emotional life is like your own? Learn the biology of emotion in you and your dog, and why it’s reasonable to believe that both species share the emotions of love, fear, sadness, happiness and anger. Debate about the Marshall-Newman Amendment
Delegate Bob Marshall is the author of the Marshall-Newman amendment, which if passed this November will codify state law against same-sex marriages and other civil unions into the Virginia Constitution. Evan Wolfson is the executive director of the group Freedom to Marry, a national organization formed to be a “central architect of the marriage equality movement.” The two men met in debate at the University of Virginia Law School on October 5th. The debate was moderated by Dahlia Lithwick, a senior editor of Slate.com.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Collaborative Law 101
Delegate David Toscano makes a non-political visit to WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now along with fellow attorney Susan White to discuss collaborative law. In particular, collaborative is a new way to conduct civil law in cases such as divorce, where both parties are willing to negotiate on all issues involving the separation.
“Everything is open, on the table, open for discussion, unlike in negotiations where often people hide the ball in order to take advantage of situations and they take these strong positions where they may try to intimidate the other side into giving in,” says Toscano.
White says this new method could save divorcing couples a lot of money by cutting down the need for litigation. Find out more about this practice in this edition of Coy Barefoot’s afternoon program.

What media should be doing in the digital age: Lost Remote’s Steve Safran talks with Coy Barefoot
Steve Safran is the managing editor of Lost Remote, a blog that tracks the latest changes in media. Safran is a digital media consultant with a background in television news. He spoke with Coy Barefoot on the October 3rd edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now about the challenges of convergence.
“Convergence media is everything that people have come to accept now in their lives from the TiVo box, to the phone that now plays music, to the computer that can now stream video,” says Safran.
But, these changes won’t come without growing pains, as traditional media such as newspapers lose their advertising revenue to their online competitors. Over the course of this interview, Safran outlines some recommendations for how media outlets might evolve to survive.
