Are we moving towards a surveillance society? John Whitehead joins Coy Barefoot on the September 27th edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now. Whitehead is the executive director of the Rutherford Institute, and he joins Coy once a month to discuss current events and rights. The two men talk about Whitehead’s recent commentary about the case between the U.S. and John Lennon, cameras on traffic lights, and the possibility of Rumsfeld’s raygun being used by police.



Richard Herskowitz announces line-up of 2006 Virginia Film Festival

The line-up for the 2006 Virginia Film Festival has been announced. The festival will explore the theme “Revelations: Finding God at the Movies” and will be held from October 26th through the 29th. Festival director Richard Herskowitz describes what attendees can expect at a press conference held at the Music Resource Center on September 27th.

Charlottesville–Right Now: A look at the proposed YMCA facility to be built at PVCC

She joined Coy Barefoot on the September 27th edition to talk about the organization’s capital campaign for a new facility for the Charlottesville-Albemarle area. The new building will be constructed on the campus of Piedmont Virginia Community College.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Political Consulting 101 with Gary Nordlinger

Gary Nordlinger is the president of the political consulting firm Nordlinger and Associates. He joined Coy Barefoot on the September 25th edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss his career, the history of political consulting, and the somewhat negative perception many political observers have of people in his profession.

“Campaign consultants influence the ten to twelve percent of the voters that just don’t pay attention to politics,” says Nordlinger. “They want their information handily condensed, and that is what a political consultant does at least at my end of the business.”

Nordlinger also tells some stories from the campaign trail, and handicaps the 2008 Presidential election. He also gives advice on how to withstand the upcoming onslaught of political ads.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Bob Gibson on Stephen King, Allen’s Jewish roots, and accusations Allen used racial slurs in college

On the September 25th edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now, Bob Gibson of the Daily Progress made his weekly appearance on the show. The segment recaps Sunday’s Democratic fundraiser for Jim Webb with Stephen King and John Grisham. A caller asks why Virginians should care what a resident of Maine thinks about Virginia’s Senate race. Bob Gibson of the Daily Progress was at the event, and weighs in on what he thought of the event. Bob also talks about his recent article on Senator George Allen’s discovery of his Jewish heritage, as well as an article in Salon.com which alleges Allen frequently used racial slurs while at the University of Virginia.

Stephen King and John Grisham raise money for Democrat Jim Webb

On Sunday, September 24th, two best-selling authors were on stage at the Paramount Theater to raise money for Democratic Senatorial Candidate Jim Webb. Stephen King was invited by Albemarle County Resident John Grisham to speak to Democrats who paid a hefty fee to attend. CPN was there and now brings you an audio recording of the event for free. The master of ceremonies for the event is Governor Tim Kaine.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Virginia 21’s Laura Baker explains new program to train poll workers

Laura Baker is the director of communications for Virginia 21. The voter advocacy group has begun a new education program called Democracy 101 to educate younger citizens on how to vote and how to become poll workers on election day.

“It’s about getting young people invested in the Commonwealth for the good of the generation and for the good of Virginia’s future,” says Baker.

Baker was a guest on the September 20 edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now with Coy Barefoot.
