Free Union Residents’ Meeting Concerning Possible VDOT HQ Closure

Many residents of Free Union are worried that a potential shutdown of a VDOT maintenance facility in their area will drastically slow down the time it takes to have their roads plowed. While VDOT officials say no decisions have been made yet, preliminary plans show Free Union as one of 91 VDOT facilities to be closed as part of a consolidation plan.

This past Friday night, a commmunity meeting was called by Free Union residents to discuss the matter. VDOT officials gave a thirty-minute presentation explaining the plans, and heard comments from Free Union residents opposed to the plan. At times, opposition is heated. Janis Jaquith served as moderator, and Waldo Jaquith recorded the event.

VDOT’s Gary Allen says that no decision has been made. The Daily Progress provides coverage of this issue in a December 2nd article by Jeremy Borden.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Lucie Morillon of Reporters Without Borders

“There cannot be the rule of law if there is no freedom of the press,” says Lucie Morillon, who works for the group Reporters Without Borders. She recently spoke with Coy Barefoot on WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss what the organization does.

“Reporters Without Borders is an international press freedom organization, and our mandate is to protect journalists, to get journalists out of jail, to bring to justice people responsible for the murder of journalists,” says Morillon. Journalists who publish stories on corruption are particular targets.

North Korea, Eritrea, and Turkmenistan have the worst records on press freedom, according to Morillan, but the United States ranks 53rd out of 168 countries in terms of press freedom. As one example, she points to the imprisonment of freelance journalist Josh Wolf in California for refusing to reveal the name of a source.

If you walk past the City Center for Contemporary Arts building this weekend, you may not be able to resist the urge to dance. That’s because the music of Fats Waller will be shaking through the walls, as Live Arts begins its run of Ain’t Misbehavin’ on the Downstage Theater. I stopped by during rehearsals to find out more about the play, and spoke with director John Owen and cast members Lily Bryant and Ricardo Coleman.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Exploring Saddam Hussein’s trials

Mark Drumbl is the director of the Transnational Law Institute at Washington and Lee University, and a guest on the November 28th edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now. He and Coy Barefoot discuss the many trials Saddam Hussein will need to go through before actually being put to death, as well as how his trial has not helped the country unify. “The trial just isn’t that important for a lot of Iraqis and it certainly isn’t succeeding in curbing sectarian violence.” But Drumbl says that doesn’t mean Saddam Hussein should not continue to be prosecuted.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Recruiting non-profit leaders with the Phoenix Project

Virginia faces a shortage of trained executives to run Virginia’s non-profit sector. So says Greg Werkheiser, the executive director of the Phoenix Project. The Phoenix Project is a non-profit organization created to build partnerships between “Virginia’s universities and distressed communities.”

Werkheiser joined Coy Barefoot on WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss the group.

“The non-profit sector has grown by 71 percent in just the past 15 years,” says Werkheiser. But, he says institutions need to do more to train replacements for the baby-boomers, who will soon begin to retire from public service.

Our apologies for not keeping the show current over the last week. We’re now back to regularly scheduled programming.

Charlottesville–Right Now: A look at the U.Va Patent Foundation

Andrea Alms and Bob MacWright are with the University of Virginia Patent Foundation. They join Coy Barefoot to explain how the group protects the University’s intellectual property. Alms is the the general manager of Spinner Technologies, which is set up to help faculty build companies powered by their inventions.

In the past year, U.Va has been the home to more than 170 inventions. “We’re a volume business,” says MacWright. At least two-thirds of the inventions come from the Medical Center, and Alms and MacWright describe some of the latest research to hit the market.

John Hunter is a fourth-grade teacher at Venable Elementary School and Chris Farina is a filmmaker. Chris has made a film about one of John’s staple techniques – the World Peace Game. The exercise has students solve problems around the world through role-playing. Hunter and Farina are the guests for this installment of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now with Coy Barefoot.
