The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression has handed out its annual Jefferson Muzzles to groups that have somehow curtailed free expression in the last year. I spoke with director Robert O’Neil to get more details on this year’s batch.
Bob Gibson of the Charlottesville Daily Progress joins Coy Barefoot on WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to talk about politics. This week the conversation includes Senator Jim Webb’s visit to U.Va (The Hook), primary season in the General Assembly (Daily Progress), and the possibility of more restrictions on abortion in Virginia. They also talk about the future of revenue sharing between Charlottesville and Albemarle County.
Liz Securro was a first-year student at the University of Virginia in the fall of 1984 when she was raped at a party. Her attacker confessed and apologized to her in a letter two years ago, and Securro turned him in to authorities. William Beebe has now been convicted and is now serving 8 months in prison.
Securro joins Coy Barefoot on WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to talk about the case, and to update listeners on the rape prevention work she is now doing.

This morning in front of City Hall, Democrat Linda Seaman announced her bid for a seat on the Charlottesville City Council. Seaman, a thirty-three year resident of the City, emphasized her past experience as a City School Board member, as the former Executive Director of the Charlottesville Area School Business Alliance (CASBA), and said she would bring a focus on cooperation with Albemarle County as she seeks regional approaches to community challenges. Ms. Seaman currently serves as a member of the board of the Interfaith Movement Promoting Action by Congregations Together (also known as IMPACT), which has been lobbying local leaders on affordable living choices and public transportation issues. Sheryl Gay Stolberg is a White House correspondent for the New York Times. From 2002 to 2006 she was a congressional correspondent for the Times. She has been a reporter for the Los Angeles Times, where she was part of two Pulitzer Prize-winning teams. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia.
On April 4, 2007, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors unanimously referred the Biscuit Run project back to the Planning Commission, the body which had unanimously rejected it the week before. They did so at the request of the developer who had expressed a preference for responding to the outstanding questions identified by staff and the Planning Commission before the project is considered by the Board. The Planning Commission is expecting a complete revised application and a tentative work session date has been set for May 22nd. Kyle Copas and Bill Daggett are with the Central Virginia chapter of the American Institute of Architects join Coy Barefoot to talk about a new exhibit celebrating area architecture called Hidden in Plain Sight: 150 Years of Architectural Design and Diversity in Central Virginia. The AIA was created in 1857, and the organization is celebrating some of the nation’s best structures. The exhibit runs through the month of April at the Charlottesville Community Design Center on the Downtown Mall.
“There are so many buildings that we all walk by day by day, that we are so familiar with and we almost forget that they are there,” says Daggett. He says the exhibit is designed to bring some of these places closer to the mind.
On this Easter Sunday edition of the Wake-Up Call, intuitive analyst Lee Channing joins Rick Moore to discuss callers’ careers, relationships, and general energy. People had questions about what paths to take in their lives – Lee gives them advice about where to turn and how best to deal with crossroads in their lives.
