WNRN Wake-Up Call: Uranium Mining

Rick Moore speaks with Cale Jaffe (Senior Attorney at Southern Environmental Law Center) about uranium mining and the negative aspects of mining in Virgina. Uranium mining was banned in 1982 by the Virginia general assembly. Uranium is radioactive and can be very dangerous, especially to bodies of water during major storms, and it has been linked to cancer.

  1. I’ve heard that a foreign group is going to be allowed to mine for Uranium near the
    Roanoke river. could that be checked on and rallied against?

  2. The tailing storage from the 1980,s plan in now in a FEMA floodn zone. Friday 5/20/11 they said that the mining would be underground. They say tailings would go in cement and go back into the mine. where are they going to store the tailings between the milling time and the return to the mine? Where are they going to store the excess? thanks
