Home Grown: Making it Happen: A Capella Hip Hop and Theatre Education

Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art

Today on Home Grown, David talks to two artists who have put on their arts organizer hats to better spread the good word and the good art. First, Mike Bizarro is putting together an A Capella Hip Hop night at The Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar. It’s local wordsmiths speaking their words without their beats. True to his role, Mike drops bits of knowledge about the nature of hip hop and the nature of art as if the knowledge was going out of style. Next, David welcomes back Miller Murray Susen just as Live Arts Theatre welcomes her back as its Education Director. We talk to Miller about what Live Arts offers in terms of education and what she hopes it can offer in the future. It’s artists reaching out to other artists and to our community on today’s Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art.

Home Grown is heard on 94.7 WPVC the Progressive Voice of Charlottesville, Sundays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Home Grown: Tease: RemIX Burlesque and It Shoulda Been You

Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art

Today on Home Grown, Leslie deals with “The Tease” and the “Taking of the Vows.” First, we are pleased to have on the show for the first time Deanna Danger from Richmond’s Boom Boom Basics and Butchertown Burlesque. She’s been performing Butchertown regularly in town, and she’s just started a new burlesque series at the Ix Art ParkRemIX: A Neo-Burlesque and Variety Show. We talk about the new series and also talk about burlesque in general — What is it? What are people’s misconceptions? What’s great about it? Is there still a stigma against it? Then we turn to another theatrical production with Blair Wingfield and Kasey Lohr from ShenanArts’ upcoming production of the musical comedy about a wedding, It Shoulda Been You. Which interview gets naughtier? You’ll just have to listen to today’s Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art.

Blokes on the Bench: 2018/2019 Season: Week 1

Blokes on the Bench host Andy Richardson and the rest of the blokes discuss week one of the new 2018/2019 Premier League season. Liverpool looks to be in top form, and favorites to catch City this year, with signings during the summer to bolster their squad. And while West Ham also spent some cash during the summer, Liverpool beat them comfortably. City continues to be in top form beating Arsenal, while United won over Leicester City at Old Trafford on opening day. Will this silence critics of Mourinho who by all accounts had a less than perfect transfer window? All that and all the rest of the league news. Plus we discuss the rising costs of watching top flight European football with subscription packages taking away what was free to watch on cable in previous years. Join us for a great show!

First, expressionist painter Adam Disbrow makes his second appearance on Home Grown. He’s got a new show called UTOPIA: New Works by Adam Disbrow going up at Mudhouse for this month’s First Fridays. Adam is a great artist to talk to, and the discussion very quickly dives down to his thoughts on “the stages of creation.” He also talks about UTOPIA — about the show, about the piece that shares the show’s name, and about the show’s other pieces. Then the only thing that can raise our spiris from having to say goodbye to Adam is to say hello again to guitarist Greg Brown. His new album Greg C. Brown drops August 10. Greg talks about the diverse range of original songs on the album, spanning a number of years. He also performs a song from the album live for us. We’ve got two great local artists talking about their art. What more do you need from Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art?
