Blogger Shaun Kenney phones in from Colorado to talk politics with Coy Barefoot on the August 30th edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now.

First up, Kenney gives his thoughts on the “macaca” incident. Kenney says he doesn’t believe George Allen is a racist and wishes the campaign would return to a more dignified tone.

“We should be able to talk about the issues that reflect Virginia, and not continue to wallow in the negative nasty mudslinging campaign tactics that we’ve seen in the past.” Kenney would like to see the candidates discussing the war on terrorism, taxes, and balancing the budget. Coy asks Kenney what he would do if he was in charge of both candidates.

Virginia Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling announces that he plans to lose 30 pounds by the end of the year. “One of the focuses of our office has been health care and trying to look for ways to promote a healthier Virginia.”

In that spirit, Bolling has announced a program called “Steptemper” to encourage Virginians to become more physically active in the next month. He tells Coy Barefoot on the August 30th edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now just how he hopes to meet his own fitness goals.

Coy Barefoot continues his look into the fall-out from the Albemarle High School bombing plot with a conversation with ACLU lawyer Rebecca Glenberg. Glenberg phones the program from Richmond and says the Constitution seems unclear when dealing with the legal rights children have while being questioned by police.

“There are no statutes in Virginia that specifically govern the rights of kids when they’re being interrogated,” Glenberg says. She suggests the General Assembly take up the matter when they meet for next year’s session.

“It would be very helpful to have a statute that clarifies when parents must be present during interrogations, when juveniles can be interrogated without parents, who can request an attorney for a juvenile.”

Delegate David Toscano joins Coy Barefoot on the August 29th edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss the upcoming special session of the General Assembly. David says he is not optimistic about the prospect for results.

“I think you might see a few things around the margins,” Says Toscano. The first-term legislator says he wonders if Republicans will be able to dedicate themselves to long-term fixes for transportation problems. “There’s been this question about how much money to invest in the infrastructure.”

The conversation also covers the recent budget error in Richmond, and the possibility of changing the law to allow parents to sit in when their children are interrogated by police.

Brian Wheeler of Charlottesville Tomorrow and Delegate David Toscano join Coy Barefoot for the weekly growth and development update. One of the topics of conversation is what will happen about the corridor between U.Va and downtown. Brian describes eleven multi-building projects being planned for the area. The group also talks about the possibility of extending the Downtown Mall north or south. Could it one day lead all the way to the Ix building?

Speaker of the House of Delegates Bill Howell joins Coy to talk about the upcoming special session of the General Assembly to deal with transportation issues. The session will begin on September 27th.

“Clearly, we’re not going to go in and five days later have Virginia’s transportation problems cured,” says Howell. “But I think we will see significant steps forward.” Howell says something needs to be done to restructure the way in which the Virginia Department of Transportation operates.

Speaker Howell also talks about the recent budgeting snafu that caused the General Assembly to hold a one-day session this week to fix a $137 million error, and gives a preview of the 2007 session.

U.Va astronomer Ed Murphy drops by WINA to talk with Coy Barefoot for his regular update on space and the solar system. Ed explains the International Astronomical Union’s decision last week to reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet. Pluto lacks the mass to “clear out its neighborhood” and is no longer considered to be a full planet. Ed gives his opinion on this, and also gives an update on the two Voyager probes and the Pluto Express mission.

Charlottesville Daily Progress columnist Bob Gibson joins Coy Barefoot for his weekly round-up on Virginia politics. Bob has the latest news on the fall-out from Senator George Allen’s “macaca” comment. Democratic challenger Jim Webb now has a slight edge in the polls, and many pundits including Bob say the gaffe hurts Allen’s chances to run for national office. Bob and Coy also talk about the General Assembly’s upcoming special session to deal with transportation issues, set for September 27th.

Albemarle County Commonwealth Attorney Jim Camblos joins Jay James and Jane Foy on the August 25th edition of the WINA Morning Show to discuss the recent Albemarle County High School bombing conspiracy. One of the four juvenile defendants in the case was acquitted last week, but the other three have been found guilty of charges to blow up the school.

Camblos says he can’t talk about much of the case, because other appeals are still pending. He says the media is misconstruing the way in which some of the defendants were questioned by police, and takes this opportunity to give his office’s point of view.

“This was a conspiracy that was caught in its very early stages,” says Camblos. He also defends the way in which Darby Lowe prosecuted the case in court.

Media General Headlines for August 28th

The General Assembly’s special session on transportation issues is fast approaching. The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors met last week with General Assembly members from the region to weigh in on what they see as the top priorities for funding. Charlottesville Tomorrow recorded the event for podcast and has a run-down on their blog.

So, what’s all this stuff about Web 2.0 anyway? Coy Barefoot speaks with U.Va education experts to get the lowdown. Steve Whitaker is on the faculty of the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, and Roger Geyer is a graduate student at Curry.

They take listeners on a journey from the early days of the Web, where information flowed from the top down, to today, when everyone has the chance to collaborate through blogs and sites like Wikipedia. Steve and Roger talk with Coy about that what this means for information and education.
