U.Va astronomer Ed Murphy drops by WINA to talk with Coy Barefoot for his regular update on space and the solar system. Ed explains the International Astronomical Union’s decision last week to reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet. Pluto lacks the mass to “clear out its neighborhood” and is no longer considered to be a full planet. Ed gives his opinion on this, and also gives an update on the two Voyager probes and the Pluto Express mission.
Charlottesville Daily Progress columnist Bob Gibson joins Coy Barefoot for his weekly round-up on Virginia politics. Bob has the latest news on the fall-out from Senator George Allen’s “macaca” comment. Democratic challenger Jim Webb now has a slight edge in the polls, and many pundits including Bob say the gaffe hurts Allen’s chances to run for national office. Bob and Coy also talk about the General Assembly’s upcoming special session to deal with transportation issues, set for September 27th.

Albemarle County Commonwealth Attorney Jim Camblos joins Jay James and Jane Foy on the August 25th edition of the WINA Morning Show to discuss the recent Albemarle County High School bombing conspiracy. One of the four juvenile defendants in the case was acquitted last week, but the other three have been found guilty of charges to blow up the school.
Camblos says he can’t talk about much of the case, because other appeals are still pending. He says the media is misconstruing the way in which some of the defendants were questioned by police, and takes this opportunity to give his office’s point of view.
“This was a conspiracy that was caught in its very early stages,” says Camblos. He also defends the way in which Darby Lowe prosecuted the case in court.

The General Assembly’s special session on transportation issues is fast approaching. The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors met last week with General Assembly members from the region to weigh in on what they see as the top priorities for funding. Charlottesville Tomorrow recorded the event for podcast and has a run-down on their blog.
Dan Olmsted is an investigative reporter for UPI who has written extensively about the autism epidemic, including a series called The Age of Autism. On the August 23rd edition of the show, Coy’s guest is John Whitehead of the Rutherford Institute. One of the topics of conversation is the recent controversey involving police questioning of minors, something that’s come up in connection with the so-called Albemarle School bombing conspiracy. One of the students did not have a lawyer or a parent present during one of his initial interviews with police. Coy also asks about a recent commentary Whitehead wrote on “What Would Jesus Bomb?”

The two legislators who represent Charlottesville and Albemarle County in the Virginia House of Delegates come from opposite sides of the aisle. But they came together Wednesday evening for a dialogue with constituents during a program sponsored by the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression. The following is the complete program from that event, moderated by Jane Foy of WINA’s morning program.
Schools are centers of education, yet all too often, violence and disrespect interrupt student learning and teacher instruction. On July 31, 2006 the Thomas Jefferson Area Community Criminal Justice Board and Central Virginia Restorative Justice sponsored a presentation given by Joseph Roy, the principal at Springfield Township High School just outside Philadelphia. Roy highlights the strategies undertaken in Springfield Township High School, which integrated restorative practices in 2001-2002.
