Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art

Today on Home Grown, David and Leslie welcome two art curators to the show to talk about what their organizations bring to our town. First, it’s Lauren Maupin, Education and Program Manager at The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection. We talk to Lauren about common misunderstandings about the Kluge-Ruhe, about the benefits that the community can glean from experiencing the works of outside artists, and about this year’s Night at the Museum summer series. Next David Plunkett, director of The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library comes on the show and weathers us at our silliest. Most notably, our David challenges that David to justify the library’s existence, and he does! It’s a show about how two arts organizations (that you might not think about much) enrich the community this week on Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art.

Today on Home Grown, David rides solo and front loads a much needed and well-felt rant at the start of a broad ranging show. First, we have Art Beltrone, co-founder of The Vietnam Graffiti Project. He’s spent years collecting graffiti from Vietnam soldiers. Hear him talk about his and his wife’s efforts to collect and save these pieces of folk art and their significance. Then, go see his talk at the Nothside Branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. Then we welcome Greg Ward with bassist Gabe Gavin from The Greg Ward Project. They strap on the intruments and give us a taste of the music before talking about reggae and unity before their concert in Crozet. Chandler’s the Director of Vinegar Hill Outreach for Light House Studio, and she fields our questions about the importance of films, plans for the future, and Light House’s Vinegar Hill ’76 Film Series, in process right now. Home Grown: Future: McGuffey Film Night plus Incubator and Middle School Girl Writers

Home Grown: Your Show about Local Art

Today on Home Grown, David looks like Lando Calrissian but flies solo (Ha!) as Leslie is under the weather, but he rocks it with two great guests. For the first time we welcome, Eileen French, artist at McGuffey Art Center, who is in charge of their Art Movie Night. She also brings with her Daniella Chadwick from their Incubator Studio, and we get into both topics — the movies, the Incubator Studio, what it’s like to watch a movie outside, what it’s like to be a young artist sharing a space with six other young artists, etc. Then, Miller Murray Susen from Village School comes on the show to talk about their Fragments of the Future Award Ceremony at New Dominion Bookshop. Middle school girls from all over the area competed in the return of Village School’s short story contest. Good guests and good talks gives you a reason to get up Sunday mornings.
