Martin Gallivan is an Archaeologist at the College of William and Mary. Sweet Briar College Anthropologist Lynn Rainville

Dr. Lynn Rainville is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at Sweet Briar College in Amherst. Rainville is an expert on Turkey, and she begins this appearance on WINA’s “Charlottesville–Right Now!” with Coy Barefoot to talk about how the Iraq War is affecting stability in Turkey. Jennifer Gonnerman is the author of Life on the Outside: The Prison Odyssey of Elaine Bartlett, which is described as “the first major work of journalism on the subject of re-entry: the challenge of leaving prison and re-entering the free world.” Gonnerman joins Coy Barefoot on “WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now!” to discuss “School of Shock“, a recent investigative piece in Mother Jones about a mental health facility in Massachusetts that uses electric shocks to treat autistic children, as well as children with other serious mental illnesses.

Steve Safran on the iPhone’s success, Google’s online applications

Steve Safran is the editor of Lost Remote, a blog that covers the continuing media revolution powering sites like the Charlottesville Podcasting Network. On this installment of “WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now!” he reviews the iPhone, U.Va’s move to Google for calendars and e-mail, as well as recent articles on Lost Remote. Most notably, Safran talks about things that he was told about online media that have proven to be wrong.

Charlottesville educator John Gaines talks history

Charlottesville native John J Gaines III joins Coy Barefoot on WINA’s “Charlottesville–Right Now!” to talk about growing up as an African-American in a Southern city. For instance, his mother couldn’t give birth to him at Martha Jefferson Hospital in 1937. Gaines grew up in the 10th and Page neighborhood, which has changed drastically in his seventy-year life. He spent forty years working as a teacher and an administrator in the Charlottesville City school system. Gaines also weighs in on the recent rash of late night beatings in downtown Charlottesville.
