To say that Tom Loach is dissatisfied with the way that Albemarle County has handled the Crozet Master Plan might be an understatement. He’s livid. Loach joins Coy Barefoot on WINA’s “Charlottesville–Right Now!” to describe what he thinks went wrong after the County doubled the build-out population from 12,000 to 24,000.
Nationally recognized musician Corey Harris was one of a recent recipient of a “genius grant” from the MacArthur Foundation. He joins Coy Barefoot on WINA’s “Charlottesville–Right Now!” to talk about how he learned about the award, and what he plans to do with it. Corey also treats listeners with a song or two.
On October 2, 2007, the two candidates for the White Hall District of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors met at a Candidates Forum sponsored by Charlottesville Tomorrow and the Free Enterprise Forum. Republican David Wyant and Democrat Ann Mallek answered ten questions on land use, transportation, and growth in the County. The candidates also answered several questions submitted by members of the audience. The event, held at Henley Middle School in Crozet, was co-moderated by Neil Williamson of the Free Enterprise Forum and Sean Tubbs of Charlottesville Tomorrow.
John Semmelhack and Jane Fisher are with the Charlottesville Community Design Center. That’s the group that’s been organizing the Market Value Competition, an architectural contest to envision the future of the two parking lots on Water Street in downtown Charlottesville. They’ll announce the finalists tonight at their headquarters on the Downtown Mall. Fisher and Semmelhack join Coy Barefoot on WINA’s “Charlottesville–Right Now!” to talk about the competition.
U.Va Physics Professor Lou Bloomfield is the co-host of a new show on the Discovery Channel called “Some Assembly Required.” The program, which debuts in late December, will seek to explain the science behind how things are made. Bloomfield joins Coy Barefoot on WINA’s “Charlottesville–Right Now!” to talk about what viewers can expect.
Shaun Kenney is the Director of Communications for the Republican Party of Virginia. Danae Jones is the Director of Communications for the Democratic Party of Virginia. They join Coy Barefoot on WINA’s “Charlottesville–Right Now!” to talk about the latest in state politics.
On October 10, the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors will consider amendments to zoning, subdivision, and water protection ordinances — all designed to enhance protection of water resources, all of which to some degree restrict property owners’ ability to develop or alter their land. This week’s Rambler reflects on the balance between individual rights and collective good.
Charlottesville historian and author Rick Britton joins Coy Barefoot each week on “WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now!” to talk about our area’s past. These days he’s working on a map of the Argonne, where the last major battle of World War I was fought. U.Va alumni James Rogers McConnell ’08 signed up as an aviator before the Americans officially entered the war, before being shot down in March of 1917. Britton tells his story in this installment.
This week’s quiz question is, who sculpted the statue of McConnell that stands outside Alderman Library?
