Charlottesville’s downtown pedestrian mall turns 30 this month, with free cake for everyone who attended a ceremony commemorating the event. The project was an effort to bring people back to downtown after other shopping centers sprang up in the area. This podcast features speeches from former city manager Cole Hendrix, former mayor Nancy O’Brien, Bob Stroh of the Downtown Business Association, current mayor David Brown and current city manager Gary O’Connell. It is hosted by Mark O’Brien and Crystal Cameron of NBC 29.

Delegate Steve Landes joins Coy Barefoot on the July 6 edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss the recent budget. Topics discussed include the space shuttle, transportation, and Landes’ opinion on how to restore funding to the United Way’s Child Care Scholarship program. State funding for the scholarship did not make it into the finalized state budget.
This interview was conducted on July 6, 2006.
Jon Nafzinger with the United Way joins Coy Barefoot on the July 5 edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now. The vice president of the Thomas Jefferson Area branch says he wishes the state government had funded the group’s Child Care Scholarships. The programs pay for daycare and babysitting for low-income workers, but state money was cut in this year’s budget. Governor Kaine submitted funds as part of his budget amendments, but those changes were not approved by the House of Delegates.
Coy’s guest on a show coming up later this week is Delegate Steve Landes, who voted to cut the funding.
Crozet resident Tom Loach joins Coy Barefoot on WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss his views on Albemarle County’s planning process. He says the way is being planned for more growth in the town. Loach is on the board of directors of Advocates for a Sustainable Albemarle Population.
This interview is from the July 5, 2006 edition of the show.

The program’s new host, Roger Cosmopolis, gets to work excavating the past, mining for fodder for fresh insults about the lukewarm temperature we find ourselves having evolved from. This program features a new track by the Hodads, as well as another new song from the Badgering Oilskin. There are other tracks by other artists which shall go nameless here because of the fear of reprisal, both from those who were suits and those who wear jean jackets and smell of stale cigarettes in a Central Virginia county. The connective tissue is from The Unsuccessful Elf by Paul Wing.
