On September 16th, the Charlottesville-Albemarle Democratic Breakfast featured a discussion of the Implications of the Marshall / Newman “Marriage” Amendment.

The event was moderated by Katherine McNamara of the online journal archipelago, and the panel includes Mark Usry of Equality Virginia, Anne Coughlin from the U.Va School of Law, Claire Kaplan of Sexual and Domestic Violence Services at U.Va, and Delegate David Toscano.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Governor Kaine’s Latino liaison Sindy Benavides

Sindy Benavides is the Deputy Director of constituent relations for Governor Tim Kaine and the Governor’s Liaison to Virginia’s Latino community. Latino Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15. On the first day of the celebration, Benavides joined Coy Barefoot on WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to talk about her own experience as an immigrant, as well as the diversity of the state’s Latino community.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Secretary of Natural Resources Preston Bryant

Preston Bryant is the Secretary of Natural Resources in Virginia. He joined Coy Barefoot on a recent installment of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss the upcoming Governor’s Natural Resource Leadership summit, to be held at Hungry Mother State Park. The event gathers together interested parties to help guide the state’s policies on the environment. Governor Kaine has pledged to set aside 400,000 acres of land into permanent conversation by the end of his term.

Wake-Up Call: Author Shawn Decker discusses life with HIV in My Pet Virus

Shawn Decker is a 31-year-old hemophiliac from rural Virginia diagnosed with H-I-V twenty years ago. He joins Rick Moore on the September 17 edition of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call to discuss his new book, MY PET VIRUS: The True Story of a Rebel Without a Cure.

Decker was recently profiled in the Hook, and will be speaking at Barnes and Noble in Charlottesville on Tuesday night.

GenTech: Putting it all together

Over the course of the previous eight shows, we’ve talked about various GenTech tools, and how each can be used for educational purposes. In this show, we begin the process of considering GenTech applications in unison, towards a common end: a social studies end-of-unit assignment about immigration.

Zona Latina has been created to give Spanish-language speakers the chance to find out more about the community.
