Wake-Up Call: Paul Cantor on Pop Culture

As movies and television have aged, become older mediums, they also become more respected by academics and journalists. Among those who study pop culture is Paul Cantor, professor of English at the University of Virginia. He’s the author of Gilligan Unbound: Pop Culture in the Age of Globalization, a comparison of three hit shows from different decades. How is Gilligan’s Island representative of Americans in the 60’s? How do The Simpsons show different cultures in the small town of Springfield? Were you aware that The X-Files displayed the importance of the internet well before it became a part of everyday life? Rick Moore talks with Cantor in the February 5 edition of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call.

Wake-Up Call: Sustainable Design in Charlottesville

The Charlottesville Waldorf School announced plans this week to become the “greenest school in America.” Here’s a bit from the press release.

It will feature a completely integrated “green” design featuring straw bale construction, a rammed earth wall, a living roof, geothermal heating and cooling, water reclamation and passive solar technologies.

How can spending a bit more money when contructing a new building save lots more money in electrical and other bills down the road? Can any contractor handle the ‘green’ job? How is the ecoMOD project moving from developing less expensive urban housing to assisting victims of hurricane Katrina? On this week’s edition of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call, Charlottesville Waldorf Foundation chair Sarah Tremaine joins U.Va Architecture professor John Quale for a discussion. Quale is the director of the ecoMOD project at the University.

The monologue touches on some of the average aspects of Americans. Rick Moore opines on how partisan political decisions are unfortunately average as well.

Wake-up Call: What is a Sudbury School?

What role should students play in running the schools they attend? Should they be able to go to school and not have teachers? That’s the topic on this week’s edition of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call. Brenda Callen and Sue Frankel-Strait are helping to start the Friendship Sudbury School in Fluvanna County.
The idea is to let pupils direct their own studies, along the lines of those who are home-schooled. This “Sudbury” model of schooling began in Massachusetts as a democratic, non-compulsory form of education. Mark McCraig of the Fairhaven Sudbury School in Columbia, Maryland, calls in to talk about how his school works.

Rick’s monologue asks if it is possible to forgive a tragedy such as the recent mining accident in West Virginia.

The concept of adding a non-voting student member to the Albemarle County School Board was discussed this week on cvillenews.com.

Wakeup Call: Does Charlottesville have enough water?

Does Central Virginia have enough water to quench the thirst of everyone who wants to live here? On the Sunday, August 14th edition of WNRN‘s Sunday Morning Wakeup Call, a panel of experts debate plans to increase storage capacity, and the prospects of more pipelines bringing more water in from surrounding communities. Guests include Morgan Butler from the Southern Environmental Law Center, Liz Palmer from the League of Women Voters and John Martin with the Friends of the Moormans River.
