The green building movement has taken Central Virginia by storm, perhaps in part because of the local presence of former U.Va Architecture Dean William McDonough. On the February 18th edition of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call, Rick Moore explores the environmental architecture with a panel of guests and why you should consider going green for your next home.
Bob Pineo is local architect and developer. Betsy Roettger, is professor of architecture at the University of Virginia. Deb Brown is the account manager for Amvic Building Systems, which makes something called insulated concrete forms. Mark Greenfield is a subcontractor who specializes in using ICFs in his work.
The panel discusses what makes a building green, how green U.Va is, ways to increase energy efficiency in your home, and the financial costs of green methods. There’s also a definition of LEED, a building standard run by a group called the U.S. Green Building Council.
Jeff Cornelius is with the Thomas Jefferson Area Coalition for the Homeless. The group conducted its annual homeless census in late January. In the five counties surveyed (Fluvanna, Albemarle, Louisa, Greene and Nelson), the TJACH estimates that there are over 200 residents that would be considered homeless.
Cornelius and callers discuss the necessity of and difficulties in counting the homeless. He also refutes some of the stereotypes people associate with those without a permanent residence. “A lot of [the homeless] have full time jobs,” says Cornelius. “They’re just not coming up with enough money to get a full-time apartment in Charlottesville.”

Lindsay Dorrier and Dennis Rooker are members of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors. This Sunday, they spoke with Rick Moore of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call about property assessments in the area. With the rapid immigration to the Charlottesville/Albemarle area over the past decade, property values have soared to many times what owners originally bought the property at. They discuss laws regarding assessment appeals and the switch to annual reassessments, what local governments do with the increased revenue, and taxes on land use. Dorrier and Rooker also discuss the new budget, and how the new revenue will affect the services the county provides.
Alexis Zeigler is a local Civil Activist and author, who just released his book, “Culture Change: Civil Liberty, Peak Oil, and the End of Empire.” On this January 28th edition of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call, Zeigler talks with Rick Moore about how social issues are often at the root of economic and political problems.
“While we are daily witness to the powers of progress manifest in the extraordinary mechanical technologies we have developed in the industrial age, we remain woefully unaware of the most basic causes of social change in our society. Our lack of social awareness does not result from the difficulty of understanding social problems, it results from the active repression of such awareness.”

Becky Reid is a grassroots coordinator with the Planned Parenthood of the Blue Ridge. She joins Rick Moore to talk about her organization’s legislative agenda for the current session of the General Assembly.

Reid says Planned Parenthood will push these bills during the group’s Pro-Choice Lobby Day on January 25th. The group will also be organizing opposition to the following bills:
HB2142 – would make abortions illegal immediately upon a reversal of Roe v. Wade

Reid first got involved with this issue while working on a campaign to make sure pharmacists were providing access to emergency contraception.
This year, a group of juniors at Albemarle High School decided to do something about drinking among their peers. So, they formed the group “This Is Us” and travel to local middle schools to talk to 8th graders about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs. Some of them joined Rick Moore on the January 7 edition of WNRN’s Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call.
U.Va professor emeritus R.K. Ramazani joins Rick Moore at the WNRN studios for the last Wake-Up Call of 2006. But, Rick isn’t one to look past. Instead, he and Professor Ramazani discuss some of the potential pitfalls of the upcoming 12 months.
Before the show, Ramazani remarked that he’s been making radio appearances for more than forty years.
In his monologue, Rick laments a House subcommittee’s decision to not tighten restrictions on payday lending in Virginia. Some of these companies charge their customers triple-digit APR in order to get some quick cash. Rick says payday loans postpone and augment financial troubles of the poor and desparate, and he thinks that the General Assembly should do something to help.
On this holiday edition of The Sunday Morning Wake-Up Call with Rick Moore, Rick does his annual reading of a traditional Christmas story. Also in the studio was Santa, making phone calls to kids in the area and checking on what they want for Christmas. He was taking phone calls all morning, hearing from children in Central Virginia.
Local musicians John Carden and Mary Elizabeth Forbes talk about “Missing You at Christmas” their song written in support of those overseas during the holidays. Also, Jeanne McCusker gives information about “Be a Santa to a Senior” a charity by Home Instead Senior Care.
Veronica Michaelsen of the Nature Spirit Ministry and Professor Daniel Perdue, a Buddhist, join Rick Moore to discuss acceptance of religions other than Christianity during the holidays.
