An old-world carnival has set up shop in the Frank Ix building for a three-week appearance. The Charlottesville Wunderkammer features art, music, and daring acts of intrigue. The event is presented by the Zen Monkey Project and the Performers Exchange Project. Sean Tubbs recently attended a preview, and has this report.

Downtown Mall Turns 30

Charlottesville’s downtown pedestrian mall turns 30 this month, with free cake for everyone who attended a ceremony commemorating the event. The project was an effort to bring people back to downtown after other shopping centers sprang up in the area. This podcast features speeches from former city manager Cole Hendrix, former mayor Nancy O’Brien, Bob Stroh of the Downtown Business Association, current mayor David Brown and current city manager Gary O’Connell. It is hosted by Mark O’Brien and Crystal Cameron of NBC 29.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Delegate Steve Landes on transportation, how to fund the United Way child care scholarship

Delegate Steve Landes joins Coy Barefoot on the July 6 edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss the recent budget. Topics discussed include the space shuttle, transportation, and Landes’ opinion on how to restore funding to the United Way’s Child Care Scholarship program. State funding for the scholarship did not make it into the finalized state budget.

Charlottesville–Right Now: United Way wants child care scholarship funds restored

Jon Nafzinger with the United Way joins Coy Barefoot on the July 5 edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now. The vice president of the Thomas Jefferson Area branch says he wishes the state government had funded the group’s Child Care Scholarships. The programs pay for daycare and babysitting for low-income workers, but state money was cut in this year’s budget. Governor Kaine submitted funds as part of his budget amendments, but those changes were not approved by the House of Delegates.
Coy’s guest on a show coming up later this week is Delegate Steve Landes, who voted to cut the funding.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Tom Loach on population growth in Crozet

Crozet resident Tom Loach joins Coy Barefoot on WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss his views on Albemarle County’s planning process. He says the way is being planned for more growth in the town. Loach is on the board of directors of Advocates for a Sustainable Albemarle Population.
