Miller Center Forum: Face to Face with Osama bin Laden

Peter Bergen is a print and television journalist who produced the first television interview with Osama bin Laden for CNN, where he is a terrorism and national security analyst. Bergen is also a Schwartz Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation, an Adjunct Lecturer at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, as well as a research fellow at New York University’s Center on Law and Security. Bergen’s books include Holy War, Inc.: Inside the Secret World on Bin Laden (2001) and The Osama bin Laden I Know: An Oral History of al Qaeda’s Leader (2006). Bergen spoke at a Miller Center forum on September 12th, 2008.

The real story of Virgil Goode and the Hummer

It’s not every day in little old Charlottesville that you can get the behind-the-scenes, accurate, true, factual story about something you see it on the national news. Or, at least the Daily Show. The other evening,

It would be very remarkable to hear about how you can buy valtrex online with no prescription safely.
Congressman Virgil Goode was the topic of a joke on the program, with host Jon Stewart commenting on Goode’s supposed appearance with a Hummer at the Fourth of July parade in Scottsville.

The Hummer in question belongs to Chris Fairchild of Fluvanna County, who joined Coy Barefoot to explain that Goode never rode in the vehicle, and did not “show up in” the Hummer.

John Whitehead: Is America declining?

John Whitehead, CEO and President of the Rutherford Institute, is having an incredibly busy summer as his organization trains 22 interns on the ins and outs of defending the Constitution. He’s also awaiting the publication of his new book The Change Manifesto: Join the Block by Block Movement to Recreate America which comes out in September. Whitehead is worried about the state of American democracy, with an increasing surveillance culture as well as an worsening economy. He implores listeners to not listen to Congress, which he says is filled with millionaires who are out of touch. Whitehead wonders if Bush is the worst presidenct since Herbert Hoover, who was in charge the last time American banks failed one after another. Is the American empire bankrupting us? Who would Jesus vote for?

Ralph Nader to visit the Gravity Lounge on July 13

Ralph Nader defines political activism for many Americans, though many also attribute George W. Bush’s presidency to Nader’s presidential run in 2000. Now, Nader is running again as an independent and will be at the Gravity Lounge on Sunday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM for a rally. Coy Barefoot spoke with Nader before the event to get a preview of what he’ll be saying this time around. Nader says Wall Street is ruining the country by taking too many risks, and points to the credit crisis as evidence. He also weighs in on the possibility of an Iranian invasion, the oil crisis, and outlines what a Nader presidency would do for the country. (photo by David Shankbone)

In today’s show, written by Brevy Cannon, General Assignments writer for University of Virginia Media Relations, we look at a recent Center for Politics event, “Reconsidering the Presidency” held at the University of Virginia in April 2008.

“The vast and ever-increasing amounts of money spent on U.S. political campaigns are a detriment to our democracy. And, contrary to public opinion, the Electoral College is a quirk of American politics that should not be tampered with…”

Those two opinions were shared by three former governors, John Sununu of New Hampshire, Lowell Weicker of Connecticut and Virginia’s Doug Wilder, during the Center for Politics event, “Reconsidering the Presidency” in April 2008…

As evidenced by the controversy now ranging between Bill O’Reilly of FOX News and Keith Olbermann of MSNBC, Roger Ailes is the rare example of a newsman who makes headlines even while he and his minions cover the politics, entertainment and personalities of our time. Ailes has been instrumental in every notable advance in TV and broadcast news and many of the political and media milestones of the past generation. Kerwin Swint has a new book about Ailes called Dark Genius: The Influential Career of Legendary Political Operative and FOX News Founder Roger Ailes. Swint is an associate professor of political science at Kennesaw State University.

Tom Perriello is the Democratic candidate for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, having been officially annointed at the 5th District caucus over Memorial Day weekend.
