Cady Garey is a lecturer in the UVA Drama department as well as a UVA Drama graduate. She was featured in a recent UVA Today article spotlighting her work of using improvisational theater techniques to help commerce students respond effectively in ethically challenging business situations.

This week WPVC’s The Mind and Heart Show host Dr. Jeff Fracher talks to Pat Coffey about mindfulness meditation, stress reduction, Theravada Buddhism and other related topics.

Pat Coffey, MEd, began his meditation practice over 30 years ago and has taught meditation since 1996. He studied with numerous Asian and Western teachers in the Theravada, Tibetan, and Zen traditions. Pat is founder of IMCC, co-founder of the Meditation Teacher Training Institute, and co-founder of the Blue Ridge Prison Project. Pat was selected and trained as a meditation teacher in the joint teacher training program of the Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts and Spirit Rock Meditation Center under the tutelage of Jack Kornfield and Joseph Goldstein. Down-to-earth, real-world, practical dharma is the hallmark of his teaching. The father of two children, owner of several businesses, and holder of several patents, he draws on his varied and rich life experience to articulate the dharma.

This week WPVC’s Sunday Morning Wake-up Call host Rick Moore talks with Virginia General Assembly Delegate David Toscano about a wide range of topics including ABC Board agents and their role in policing underage drinking, the installation of Virginia Supreme Court Justice Jane Roush and the US 29/Rio Road development.

David Toscano is serving his fifth term in the Virginia General Assembly. He represents the 57th District (Charlottesville and part of Albemarle County) in the House of Delegates and, since 2011, has served as House Democratic Leader. David is a member of the Courts of Justice; Transportation; and Rules committees. David is also a member of the Disability Commission and has served on the special Joint Subcommittee to Study Land Use Tools in the Commonwealth and the Joint Committee to study Math, Science, and Engineering. He is a member of the Manufacturing Development Commission, the Virginia Adopts Statewide Steering Committee, the Virginia Alcohol Safety Action Program Committee, and the Board of Directors of the New College Institute. He is also a member of the United Way Board.

Heidi Altman joined the CAIR Coalition as legal director in 2013. Heidi previously served as a Supervising Attorney at Georgetown Law School’s immigration clinic, supervising students providing representation to asylum seekers facing removal proceedings in immigration court. Before moving to D.C., Heidi created and led an in-house immigration services program at the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, a holistic public defender office in New York City. Heidi graduated from New York University School of Law and has a Master’s in International Affairs from Columbia University.

She has extensive experience in the highly specialized area of Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, helping high-profile federal, corporate and non-profit organizations cope with and stabilize in the aftermath of traumatic events. Most recently, she spent 17 months assisting the victims of the Washington, DC Navy Yard shooting. Known for her extreme compassion, with a light-hearted touch, she is one of the most sought after Critical Incident experts in the DC metropolitan area.
