On the March 10 Wake-Up Call, host Rick Moore speaks with Dr. Carl Bowman, Faculty member and Director of Survey Research at U.Va.’s Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture and Megan Juelfs-Swanson, doctoral candidate in Sociology as they discuss “The Culture of American Families Project.

The project is a multi-year study comprised of on-line surveys and face to face interviews, examining the treasured hopes, deepest fears, and most pressing challenges of today’s parents. The goal is to understand the climate in which children are being raised today. Some topics covered: What does it mean to be a “good parent” or a “good child” in this era. What challenges exist in parenting and how is parenting different now than in previous decades.

*Due to technical difficulties only the first forty minutes of the program were recorded.

Rick’s guest is Professor Tim Wilson of the U.Va. Psychology department to talk about his new book Redirect: The Surprising New Science of Psychological Change. You can read more about Tim at http://people.virginia.edu/~tdw/

What if there were a magic pill that could make you happier, turn you into a better parent, solve a number of your teenager’s behavior problems, reduce racial prejudice, and close the achievement gap in education? Well, there is no such magic pill-but there is a new scientifically based approach called story editing that can accomplish all of this. It works by redirecting the stories we tell about ourselves and the world around us, with subtle prompts, in ways that lead to lasting change. In Redirect, world-renowned psychologist Timothy Wilson shows how story-editing works and how you can use it in your everyday life.

Rick talks with the Intuitive Consultant Lee Channing, who is a Certified Hypnotherapist with more than 35 years’ experience in energy work with individuals, groups, and businesses.

Stunned by her vivid clairvoyant episodes, Lee Channing spent many years researching psychic phenomena with a view toward honing her abilities to guide others with her insights.

In 1993, Channing co-founded Spirits Evolving, Ltd. to promote greater understanding of the personal and universal energy affecting our lives at home and in the workplace. Using self-awareness, color, and creative visualization, Channing helps individual clients open the door to their own energy source while corporate and business clients benefit from a pragmatic, intuitive analysis of strategic initiatives.

Rick talks with author Corban Addison about human trafficking. Corban holds degrees in law and engineering from the University of Virginia and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He began to experiment with writing at the age of fifteen, about the same time he developed an interest in international travel.

In the summer of 2008, Addison’s wife gave him an idea that he found irresistible—a novel on the global trade in human beings. A Walk Across the Sun was born. It is a novel that brings together three of Addison’s great passions—storytelling, human rights, and the world and its cultures—in a narrative that enlightens while it entertains. Addison is a supporter of international justice causes, including the abolition of modern slavery, and he is committed to broadening this support through the publication.
