Charlottesville–Right Now: Hate Talk on the Airwaves

Spocko is a blogger from San Fransisco who was appalled at what he was hearing on the radio station KSFO, owned by ABC. The station had been broadcasting what Spocko described as “violent rhetoric,” and Spocko persuaded several advertisers to pull their support of the station. His blog was later served with a “cease and disist” order from ABC. On this clip of Charlottesville–Right Now! with Coy Barefoot, Spocko explains his experiences with KSFO and what the Electronic Frontier Foundation has done to help him deal with the legal side of the controversy.

Later on, Jamison Foser of Media Matters for America joins the discussion. Foser explains how anyone can call attention to this type of speech on the radio - both to management and to the advertisers who pay for it.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Jaquith shines Richmond Sunlight on General Assembly

Richmond Sunlight

Local political blogger Waldo Jaquith was fed up with the sub-standard quality of governmental websites. As a website developer by hobby and trade, he created RichmondSunlight.com, where all the bills and legislators of Virginia’s General Assembly are tracked and archived. One thing that Jaquith strives to achieve with the new website is ending the secrecy behind voting records. In the past, votes have not been officially recorded at subcommittee meetings; Richmond Sunlight makes it easier for regular citizens to post voting information and stay informed on what’s going on with their General Assembly. In addition to the wealth of raw information available at the site, audio - and soon video - recordings of Assembly sessions and committee meetings are made available online. This way, Jaquith says, “We can all keep tabs on what our representatives are doing down in Richmond.”

Charlottesville–Right Now: Political Blogger Shaun Kenney

Shaun Kenney is one of the most prevalent political bloggers in Virginia. He comes on Charlottesville–Right Now with Coy Barefoot to discuss the Democratic Congress, Mark Warner, and other local and national political issues. The focus of the conversation centered around how the newly-Democratic Congress will change foreign policy in reference to oversight committees and the future of the War on Terror. Whether the Democrats have a plan for post-war Iraq was heavily debated, and several callers shared their opinions on the matter. Virgil Goode’s recent comments about Representative-elect Keith Ellison of Minnesota and Ed Gillespie as the new chairman of the Republican National Committee were also touched upon.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Waldo Jaquith and Shaun Kenney share election eve thoughts

Waldo Jaquith and Shaun Kenney join Coy Barefoot on the November 6th edition of WINA’s Charlottesville-Right Now to discuss the election, and a new Survey USA poll that had Webb at 51 percent in the polls. However, a Gallup poll has Allen slightly ahead. Is the election a referendum on Allen’s character?

Kenney is running the campaign for Marilyn Musgrave, a candidate for Colorado’s 4th Congressional District. Jaquith works as the webmaster for the Virginia Quarterly Review. At one point, Hawes Spencer of the Hook joins the discussion to talk about Gail Parker’s political ad.

Charlottesville–Right Now: Rick Sincere News and Thoughts

Coy Barefoot continues his series on Virginia bloggers with a conversation with Rick Sincere, a libertarian blogger from Charlottesville. Sincere wonders why
the Republicans in government have strayed so far away from their core values while in power.

“When the Republicans gained control of Congress in 1994, there was a lot of hope they would roll back of the federal monstrosity,” says Sincere. “It hasn’t happened.”

Sincere also says dire predictions about electronic voting machines are not warranted. He also explains why he’s voting no on the Marshall-Newman amendment.

Chad Dotson of the Commonwealth Conservative phones in on the November 2 edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now from his home in Wise, Virginia. Dotson and Coy Barefoot talk about Larry Sabato’s recent prediction that Jim Webb will defeat George Allen in the senate race. Dotson disagrees, and says this race is much closer than it should be.
