Melissa Howard talks to the former prison guard about her career as a frontwoman for the band that has a true 70’s-soul throwback sound, and how she feels about Amy Winehouse’s success using the same group as her backing band.

 

Before a sold out Corner-sponsored concert at The Southern, The Infamous Stringdusters and special guest Sara Watkins performed a five-song Corner Lounge Private Performance at The Sound Studios in Charlottesville. There was an audience of about 60 Corner VIP contest winners in attendance for this live session recording.

 

Before his first-ever concert appearance in Charlottesville, Joe Purdy dropped by The Corner Lounge and played some epic solo/acoustic songs! Joe is from rural Arkansas and has 12 albums to his credit, and has become one of the most successful artists with an internet-based following, while not having any major “hits” or significant radio airplay.

 

Genna Matthew got her start at age 15 at the Music Resource Center. Her debut full-length album “Don’t Let The Sun” was just released. She’s also a UVA first-year and talks about life as a student and performing singer-songwriter. She also performs live/acoustic in The Corner Lounge, and talks about the song “Waitlist” which has become a UVA favorite, about her time on the school’s Wait List.

 

Before their concert at UVA’s Old Cabell Hall, we were honored to welcome the Derek Trucks Band to The Corner Lounge. The band plugged-in for this great live session and interview. Derek also discusses life-on-the-road for his two children when both parents are full-time musicians, and plans for 2010.

 

After his weekend concert appearance, Harper Simon dropped by The Corner Lounge to talk with Melissa Howard and play a few songs solo/acoustic. He talked about being the son of music royalty (Paul Simon) and all the notable guests on his debut album.

 

Amy Millan talked to Jeff Sweatman via phone in The Corner Lounge about Amish furniture, New York City, the “Rock’n'Roll Support Network”, pillow fights, and her work with Stars, Broken Social Scene and her two great solo albums. She performed at DC9 (Washington DC) on 11/8.

 

Zee Avi returned to The Corner Lounge and Virginia Arts Studio before her second appearance in Charlottesville at Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar on 11-6-09. She loves our town! Zee talks about Malaysia, grass skirts, and touring constantly. Is she an ambassador for her country? She was joined for this tour (and on this session) by Patrick Keeler, drummer of The Raconteurs, who is credited with her discovery via YouTube.

 

Austin, TX five-piece The Band Of Heathens joined us at The Sound Studios before their show in Charlottesville. They talked with Brad Savage about being on Austin City Limits, being #1 on the Americana charts, and what to do when you visit Austin!

 

Local favorite Corey Harris dropped by The Corner Lounge to talk about his new CD “blu.black” and the concert at The Southern. He also discusses the death of Jonny Gilmore, and plays an acoustic song in tribute to the Charlottesville drummer.
