12.7.10 Best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Chris Hedges joins Coy to discuss his new book Death of the Liberal Class. Movements expressing rage, anger, and discontent towards established power have taken center stage, argues Hedges, because today’s government is no longer looking out for the working class. From the creation of the middle class out of the labor movement, to the financial ramifications of World War I and the Espionage Act of 1917, one of the most intelligent, informed guests in the history of the program explains exactly to where and under what circumstances this “liberal class” has dissappeared.

12.7.10 Historian and author Rick Britton joins Coy to wrap up their discussion of the 25 most important Civil War battles. The final engagement between the Confederate and Union Armies took place at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, and in today’s recreation of the events, General Robert E. Lee finds himself totally outnumbered and surrounded on three sides by General Sheridan’s cavalry. Lee is willing to scrape together one final stand, but after hearing a message that his men cannot break through the Union lines, the Confederate General realizes his pool of options has run dry. The conversation also teases Britton’s new speaker series on early Virginia history at the Charlottesville Senior Center.

12.6.10 Charlottesville Fire Chief  Charles Werner joins Coy to discuss the Taco Bell destroyed by a fire over the weekend. Thankfully no lives were lost as the building on U.S. 29 was destroyed Saturday evening, but Chief Werner is all about safety first and has advice for handling such emergency situations. A brief chat today- yet very important information nonetheless.

12.6.10 Founder and President of Virginia Tomorrow Bob Holsworth joins Coy to continue their weekly discussion of Virginia Politics. Former Democratic State Senator Criegh Deeds announced today that he will run for re-election despite his defeat in the gubernatorial race last November to Bob McDonnell, and Holsworth isn’t quite sure it’s the right move. Also, Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli had kind words for a recent EPA decision, but will the romance last? President Obama issued a 7 year halt on east-coast off-shore drilling last week, but will complaints from Democratic Senators Webb and Warner have any effect? One of the foremost experts in Virginia politics tackles all of that and much more.

This week Abena sits down with Darden Professor Lynn Isabella to discuss Global Leadership. In this week’s news: “GEMBA Moving Forward,” “Dancing with the Darden Stars,” and “Darden Partners Share Good Cheer.”

Host Rick Moore talks with Dr. Lillian Mezey (Psychiatrist at Region 10) and Lenny Carter (Psychologist at UVA Student Health Services) about different forms of depression. Symptoms of depression include: thoughts of suicide, feeling worthless, loss of appetite, etc. Also, some people may experience depression during a certain time of the year. Depression can also occur at any age.

12.3.10 Newly appointed Charlottesville City Manager Maurice Jones joins Coy live from the 22nd annual Toy Lift at Fashion Square Mall. You can now remove the “interim” from his title, as the Charlottesville City Council announced Friday morning that Mr. Jones has been officially named the new City Manager. Formal approval of the appointment will take place in a special session Monday morning, and in today’s conversation the man of the hour explains the entire process- from interviewing for the position to what issues sit at the forefront of his agenda.

12.2.10 Professor Herman Schwartz from the University of Virginia’s Woodrow Wilson Department of Politics joins Coy discuss a variety of current events. Among the issues addressed in the conversation are the extension of the middle class tax cuts, the fundamentals of unemployment insurance, and a whole lot more. Coy calls this guest “one of the smartest men to ever enter the studio,” and today he lived up to the title. Be sure to check out Schwartz’s most recent book Subprime Nation: American Power, Global Finance and the Housing Bubble.

12.2.10 Professor of Painting and Drawing in the University of Virginia Studio Art Program Richard Crozier joins Coy to discuss his retirement. UVA will celebrate the event with a special gallery at First Friday’s tomorrow night. The conversation covers Crozier’s career in the fine arts, from realizing the sciences were not for him to getting into teaching at the collegiate level. Also included are the professor’s favorites: peices of art, places to paint, and much more.

12.2.10 Professor of Astronomy at the University of Virginia Ed Murphy joins Coy to discuss NASA’s discovery today of new space life. The bacteria in question is able to survive on arsenic, a substance poisonous to humans. While the breakthrough does not confirm the presence of extraterrestrial life, it does prove the existance of life forms which can thrive in ways atypical to life on Earth. Hear the subject broken down by a local expert here.

12.2.10 Founder and President of the Rutherford Institute John Whitehead joins Coy to discuss “cyber bullying.” A lawyer and author, Mr. Whitehead recently wrote a letter to Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli attacking his recent opinion that teachers should be allowed to search students’ electronic devices. Is Cuccinelli’s idea a breach of the 4th Amendment?
