06 February 2007 | By Coy Barefoot in Charlottesville--Right Now, WINA

Dave Norris Charlottesville City Councilor Dave Norris joins Coy Barefoot on Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss affordable housing in Charlottesville. He explains the background of real estate prices in the area - how prices got to where they are, and what can be done about it. Working class families are unable to afford even the cheapest rental housing in Albemarle County. How do you work with developers to make housing affordable? Norris believes the city should provide incentives (such as higher density development) to companies that agree to create a certain amount of “affordable” units. There are also many alternative programs in action to provide cheap housing in the area, including “housing trusts” and volunteer programs such as Habitat for Humanity.
