U.Va Astronomer Ed Murphy joined Coy Barefoot on the August 18th edition of WINA’s Charlottesville–Right Now to discuss the recent plan by the International Astronomical Union to reclassify the planets. The IAU will vote next Thursday on a plan to redefine the solar system as having 12 planets, and not 9. The potential debate is being fiercely debated by astronomers.

“My solution would be that we tell children there are kinds of planets, not how many there are,” Murphy says.

Murphy points out some of the interesting sights in our solar neighborhood, including Io, one of Jupiter’s moons. Io is one of the only other places in the solar system besides the Earth that has active volcanoes.

Charlottesville–Right Now is broadcast live Monday through Friday on NewsRadio 1070 WINA from 4 to 6pm. Best-selling author and historian Coy Barefoot is the host and producer. To participate in the program, you can call 434-977-1070. Coy can be reached at barefoot@wina.com.
