Soon after Europeans arrived on the shores of Virginia four centuries ago, negative depictions of native culture helped the newcomer assert his dominance, paving the way for the almost total destruction of the Indian way of life. This topic is the theme of this 74-minute panel from the 2005 Virginia Festival of the Book, called Myth, Legend, History, and Truth: The Representation and Misrepresentation of Virginia Indians Beginning With Pocahontas.

The panel is introduced by David Bearinger of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, the organization behind VABook. Suzan Shown Harjo, a member of the Cheyenne and Hodulgee Muscogee tribes, moderates the panel which includes: Chief Stephen R. Adkins of the Chickahominy tribe, Paula Gunn Allen, (Laguna Pueblo, Pocahontas: Medicine Woman, Spy, Entrepreneur, Diplomat), and authors Helen Rountree (Pocahontas, Powhatan, Opechancanough), and Camilla Townsend (Pocahontas and the Powhatan Dilemma).

This program is a joint venture of the VFH and the Virginia Council on Indians.
